    Hummingbird-Another Visit to the Gardens

Hummingbird-Another visit to the Gardens This little guy was a frequent visitor to my backyard gardens. I have many Cardinal plants (lobelia) planted in various gardens at our house. The hummingbirds love them! I would spend hours sitting outside waiting for these little guys to come around, sometimes I would get lucky and I would not have to wait too long. Other times, I would leave my spot, turn around as I am walking away, only to see a couple flying around the gardens. They are very challenging to photograph.

  • HUMMINGBIRD-IN FLIGHT

    HUMMINGBIRD-IN FLIGHT

HUMMINGBIRD-IN FLIGHT is one of the many hummingbirds that frequent my backyard gardens in Thornton, Pa. These ruby throated hummingbirds tend to migrate to Central America, Mexico and Florida for the winter. Late spring they head back to the Eastern United States to breed. The adult hummingbirds are solitary, they do not socialize with other hummingbirds other than to breed. The female builds the nest and takes care of the young. They usually have two broods a season. For their size, they are very aggressive. Not only will they chase other hummingbirds out of their established territory, I have seen them chase other birds, twice their size away from feeders. Even though I know they are not being nice to each other, I enjoy watching them race around the yard, chirping away!

GREAT BLUE HERON-THE HERON OF BRINTON LAKE

GREAT BLUE HERON-THE HERON OF BRINTON LAKE was captured at our lake in Thornbury Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. From spring until late fall the lovely long legged birds frequent our private lake looking for their next meal. They share the lake with other waterfowl and also the turtles that our sitting on the log next to the heron. Unfortunately, this historic area has been greatly affected by the enviornment. This community was formally owned by Concord Country club and was the resort area for their members, offering cottages, swimming, horseback riding and special events. Today, the area is owned by the home owners in the Brinton Lake Community. A few of the original cottages still exisit but many have gone through a renovation process.
