  • MASSACHUSETTS-LONGFELLOW BRIDGE TOWER

    MASSACHUSETTS-LONGFELLOW BRIDGE TOWER

MASSACHUSETTS-LONGFELLOW BRIDGE TOWER. The bridge crosses over the Charles River connecting the Beacon Hill area in Boston to the Kendal Square area in Cambridge. The bridge is nearly one half of a mile long, and 105 feet wide. It serves as a railway, highway bridge with a pedestrian walkway. The bridge has arched steel spans supported on 10 masonry piers. On the large central pier are four tower structures depicting the bow of Vikings ships which represent the voyage of Leif Eriksson’s travel on the Charles River around 1000AD. The city seals of Boston and Cambridge also adorn the towers. This is an image of one those ornamental towers.

Custom House Tower in Boston another view

Custom House Tower in Boston another view. The tower stands at 65ft. in McKinley Sq. The tower has copper-sheathed couplet windows, an illuminated observation deck. Each of the four sides has a 22-foot-wide marble-and-bronze clock. At the time of the construction of the new building, there was a city ordinance which capped the height of the building to 215 feet. Because the property was owned by the Federal Government, they were permitted to by-pass the height restriction, and was built to the height of 495 feet. It held the title of Boston’s first skyscraper and tallest building until the completion of the Prudential Tower in 1964.
