South Carolina-Downtown Fountain
South Carolina-Downtown Fountain. The fountain is located in Water Front Park, in Charleston, South Carolina. It is located at the northern entrance to the park at the end of Vendue Range St. Beyond the fountain begins Vendue Wharf. It is a wide, wooden pier which extends into the Cooper River. A floating dock is attached at the far end which provides unobstructed views of the Ravenel Bridge, Charleston Harbor, Castle Pinckney, the U.S.S. Yorktown and Fort Sumter. After a long period of decline the area started to undergo a rehab project initiated by Mayor Joseph Riley in 1975. After acquistion of the land and a decade of planning and raising money for the project, they finally broke ground in 1988. The Waterfront Park opened May 11, 1990.
