Echinacea-The Return of this Coneflower. About nine years ago I started buying the different varieties of coneflowers. Reds, oranges, yellows only to find out the plants were sterile. Native echinacea multiple by spreading seeds from the mother plant. After a couple of years the mother plant dies off and the seedling take over. Not true with the new varieties. When mama plant does the seeds she sheds do not develop into new plants therefore they cease to exisit. Shockingly this year, this little gem popped up in my garden amongst all the purple coneflowers. Now, I can't wait until next year to see if the plant comes back. Till then....
