Visited the Portland Head Lighthouse on our recent trip to Maine. The lighthouse is located in Port Elizabeth. Construction of the lighthouse was started by the General Court of Massachusetts, in 1787. In 1790, the US Government took over control of the lighthouses, it was completed and first lit on Jan 10,1791. The original tower measured 72' from base to lantern deck and was lit with 16 whale oil lamps. By 1865, the tower was raised 20' and a 2nd order Fresnel lens was installed.
