Rome-Ponte Sisto. This iconic Roman bridge is one of the most frequented pedestrian bridges in the city. It connects the center of Rome to Piazza Trilussa in the neighbourhood of Trastevere. The bridge dates back to 1475, commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV Della Rovere. It was built to accommodate the large crowds of pilgrims making their way to St Peter’s Basilica. Until then, the only bridge crossing near St Peter’s was Ponte Sant Angelo. The high number of pilgrims traveling across the Ponte Sant Angelo Bridge was becoming incredibly dangerous. In 1450 so many people crowded onto Ponte Sant Angelo a stampede resulted and 170 pilgrims died as a result. The bridge crosses the Tiber River.
